Homeowners please keep utilities on ALWAYS

Homeowners please keep utilities on ALWAYS, by Claudia S. Nelson with Keller Williams Realty in Woodbridge VA

With these cold temperatures we are currently having in Woodbridge VA the worst thing you can do is not keeping utilities on in a vacant home. The money that you are saving on utities isn’t worth the risk of frozen pipes or worse.Earlier today I was showing homes and one of the homes didn’t have utilities on and the home was most likely not winterized. When we looked into one of the bathrooms this is what we saw. The water in the toilet was frozen. I truly hope there are no damages.

It is very important that when your home is on the market that you either keep on the utilities or you winterize the home. My preference is keep the utilities on. If you turn off the utilities bad things can happen. Like frozen pipes, flooding due to sump pump not working and so on.

If you had tenants in your home always revert the utilities back into your name as soon as the tenants move out. This way an interruption is avoided and you don’t have to worry about  anything bad happening to the property.
